What locals say
We visited right as it opened and it was wonderfully quiet. A nice change of pace in the middle of Shibuya. The waitress was super friendly. The food was incredible!! Although I would only recommend it if you truly like sweets
I came alone after dinner as I was craving for some matcha dessert. The environment was nice but the dessert was just okay. There were not many options on the menu and I picked the seasonal parfait which was chestnut with hojicha ice cream, and I added 110 yen for matcha for the drink. The parfait was alright, nothing special, the matcha was nice but portion was quite little considering still need to top up to choose this.
As a matcha lovers, I definitely won't miss matcha when visiting Japan! So, this was my very first matcha that I tried in Japan. Recommended by my Japanese friend, Sate Zenkashoin is located on the 5th floor of Shibuya Hikarie ShinQs. That time was on a weekday afternoon. No customers here. So, it felt like a private cafe 🤣 They provide desserts and beverages as well. At first, we would like to try their matcha kakigori (Japanese shaved ice), but this menu isn't available anymore. That's why, we decided to try their parfait for sharing and I had Matcha Latte as the drink. Firstly, let's talk about the parfait. This parfait consists of hojicha (roasted green tea) ice cream, cream, red beans, abundant of jelly, crunchy cookies. Mix them all together and enjoy it! I love the cookie. It tastes similar with lidah kucing (cat tongue cookies) 😁 For the matcha latte, it consists of matcha and milk. It's less sweet as well. The more we drink it, the more matcha taste that we get. Tbh, it's different with the common matcha that I had in Indonesia with more milky taste 😂 It is served with the sweet and savory fried snacks. If we sit beside the glass window, we could see the beauty of Tokyo street from above.
Everything was so good!! We got there around 4:30, and waited around 10 minutes for a table, and our order came in ~15 minutes. Each dessert comes with a drink, but depending on the drink it might raise the price of your order. I got the matcha shaved ice with an iced matcha latte, which was an additional 50 yen on top of the price of the shaved ice. I felt like the price of the shaved ice was very worth it for the portion, but the mizu (water) jelly and warabi mochi might be a little expensive. Definitely get one of the shaved ices if you come here. The presentation of the dishes, the color of the matcha, and the flavor of the sweets were all really good.
At Satei Zenkashoin, enjoying traditional Japanese sweets with tea is a calm and refined experience. The desserts are beautifully presented, and the DIY grilled mitarashi dango is especially enjoyable—you can slowly grill it yourself and add sauce to your liking, which adds a nice sense of ritual. The counter seating by the window offers a lovely night view, making the atmosphere peaceful and relaxing. The only drawback is that hot water cannot be refilled, which is a bit disappointing for those who prefer to enjoy their tea slowly. Overall, it’s still a charming Japanese tea spot worth visiting, and the experience would be even better with hot water refills.
